Announcing the Winners of the Canyoning Australia’s 2025 Photo Competition!

The results are in, and the Canyoning Australia is thrilled to announce the winners of this year’s Photo Competition! From stunning Blue Mountains slot canyon sun rays to some crazy flows and first descents around the country, our committee was super impressed with the level photography skills our members have to showcase the incredible beauty of canyoning in Australia. With an outstanding number of entrants and many excellent entries to choose from, our panel of judges selected four outstanding images—and one special story—that truly captured the essence of canyoning in Australia.

With special thanks to Adventure Base, Canyon Zone and Climbing Anchors for prize sponsorship. 🥰

Judging criteria

Photos were judged on a number of factors including subject, composition, framing, lighting, artistry and novelty. Yes technical quality was important but above all the question we asked was “What does this say about canyoning in Australia?”.

Winners

🥇 Without human element - Albert Hakvoort

The glow worms in Grand Canyon look like constellations of stars on a clear night. We were very impressed. A very worthy winner of our Adventure Base prize!

🥈 Without human element - Runner up - Anja Fuchtbauer

Ah the famous “Hulk’s Fist” that draws canyoners to visit Claustral Canyon in the Blue Mountains from around Australia and the globe! Our panel liked the use of black and white… a different take on a common shot.

🥇 With human element - Matt Finlay

Honestly, this is what canyoning is all about. Absolutely frothing the flow in Danae Brook canyon. We love seeing adventurers getting absolutely rinsed. What a character!

🥈 With human element - Runner up - Marty Blumen

Titled “Into The Looking Glass”. We loved the great framing, use of light and water reflection.

🤯 Coolest story - Craig Stanfield

We’re absolutely blown away by Seth, the pictured canyoner, who is 100% blind and descending Empress Falls by himself with the support of Scouts Australia canyon guides. A truely amazing young person and an inspiration to all. We think Seth deserves a special prize because he is a bloody legend!
