Temporary closure of Mt Hay Road (Butterbox Canyon access)

Post by T2 » 31 Jul 2019, 17:32

National Parks have advised that Mount Hay Road north of Fortress Ridge will be closed to vehicle traffic in early August for road maintenance.

In effect, this means Mt Hay (Butterbox) Canyon is closed (unless you're willing to do a very long walk in). Fortress Canyon remains open.

Good news that this road maintenance was timed for winter, which greatly reduces the impact on canyoners.

The roadworks are now complete, but National Parks have advised that the entire road will remain closed until there is "significant rain". Apparently this is required to have the new surface settle in before vehicles use it. So until further notice, the road is shut from the gate at the park boundary.

This means that there is no vehicle access to Mt Hay (Butterbox) Canyon, Fortress Canyon, and Arethusa and Alpheus canyons (from the east).

Good news. Mt Hay Road is back open just in time for the canyoning season. It seems the 20mm of rain that fell in the upper Mountains this week was enough to settle the road ready for use.
