Recall of new version of the Petzl Pirana descender

Post by T2 » 26 Jan 2022, 13:39

Petzl has issued a recall of their PIRANA descender (the new version, released in 2019) due to a drowning risk if the rope accidentally gets caught in the blocking slot.

The company has asked people to immediately stop using these descenders.

The issue that prompted the recall is that when people abseil off the end of the rope, as is standard in flowing water canyons, it can occasionally flick around and get caught in the lock-off slot. The below video shows some examples of this occurring.

The official recall notice from Petzl is here: https://www.petzl.com/INT/en/Sport/reca ... DER-RECALL

If you have a Pirana affected by this recall, you can fill out this form (https://www.petzl.com.au/australian-ret ... rana-2022/) or get in touch with the retailer who sold it to you.
