Newnes Canyon (Starlight Canyon) bat hibernation

Post by T2 » 17 Aug 2018, 22:55

If you're anything like me, you probably struggle to remember exactly when you should avoid Newnes (Starlight) Canyon due to hibernating bats. Below is a photo of the National Parks signage just after the turnoff from the Pipeline Track with all the info. Canyoners are asked to avoid the canyon over the cooler months -- May to September -- as that is when the bats are hibernating. Light from torches or loud noise can cause them to wake up, which can lead to them dying of starvation.
