Macquarie Pass (a.k.a. Macquarie Rivulet) is a popular canyon in the greater Wollongong region.

It is broken down into two parts:
  • Upper section v4a3III**
  • Lower section v3a3III**
Often when people refer to Macquarie Pass canyon they are referring to the lower section.

See attached canyon topo for canyon descent information.

Macquarie Pass (a.k.a. Malaria Rivulet)
Good job doing a topo for Mac Pass! You need to do a topo for the lower canyon now too...

But do you mean Macquarie Rivulet, not Malaria Rivulet?

Great info Alex. We are looking at this nxt weekend. Looks to be a great day. Any advice on entering to top half, I believe ol mate has positioned a fence over his boundary and made it difficult/dangerous to start. Or just jump out at the road and follow the obvious.

National Parks have a really clear closure notice on their website about trying to access the top of the falls from the road (see below). I believe there are cameras now and police are called if people try to go in that way.

The best way to do the upper section is to head in via Clover Hill Rd (like you would for the lower section). Once you cross the rivulet you follow a rough track on the south (true right) up to Clover Falls. From the base of these falls cross over and head up an even rougher track on the north (true left) to the top. A short scramble gets you to the cliff top and the first abseil is very close by.

The advantage of this route (beyond not breaking the law / further inflaming tensions with local landowners) is you don't need to do a car shuffle.
Closed areas: Access to Macquarie Rivulet via top of Macquarie Pass not permitted
Applies from Tue 18 Jun 2019, 9.18am. Last reviewed: Tue 09 Jun 2020, 8.15am.

Access to Macquarie Rivulet from Mount Murray, at the top of Macquarie Pass is not permitted. If you access the rivulet from the top of the escarpment, you will be trespassing on private property and this action may result in police involvement.

The recommended access points for Macquarie Rivulet are via Clover Hill Road and from the Cascades/Rivulet carparks. Penalties apply for non-compliance. For more information, please call the NPWS Illawarra area office on 02 4224 4188.
