Two stuck overnight in Butterbox

Post by mountains_mishaps » 22 Apr 2021, 17:48

April 13, 2021: Two 18 year-old men from Canberra went into Butterbox Canyon about 11am, and later became stranded there overnight. Part of the canyon requires a series of abseils and the doubling of ropes to descend to the next pitch/ledge. On one level, the men couldn’t pull down the rope and became stuck, unable to proceed up or down. The pair activated a PLB. Police Rescue and Ambulance SCAT operators walked into the canyon, but it was dark by the time they found them. They all stayed for the rest of the night and walked out the following morning. The young men were uninjured, although they had to endure a cold night. Blue Mountains Gazette 21/4/2021
