Incredibly lucky rescue: Group throws Nalgene bottle down waterfall with SOS note

Post by T2 » 11 Sep 2019, 09:46

This one isn't from Australia, but definitely an interesting read.

The group were doing a four day trip down a river when they reached a narrow canyon section that had previously had a fixed rope to help groups through. It had likely been washed away by heavy rain, leaving the group stranded.

Their solution? Scribble "HELP" on a Nalgene bottle, with a note inside with more info, and toss it down the canyon for the river to carry. Incredibly, the low tech solution worked, and a rescue was started within a couple hours.

Definitely not a solution that'd work in most parts of the Blue Mountains.

Some useful lessons though about not relying on fixed ropes or other gear being in place (always carry rope, tape to replace anchors, etc) and also having a plan for calling in a rescue if needed.
