FreezeFest 2022

Post by T2 » 27 Jun 2021, 10:02

*** Save the date ***

When:
Saturday 18 / Sunday 19 June 2022 (plus Monday 20 June for those who are keen)
Where: Mount Wilson

Next year will be the 10th anniversary of FreezeFest in Australia, so rather than do the usual short notice / disorganisation thing, we're going to set the date really early. Hopefully we can make it the biggest and best FreezeFest ever!

What is FreezeFest?

FreezeFest is an informal gathering of canyoners in the depths of winter. Anyone is welcome to join, as long as you are suitably experienced and self-sufficient.

The idea comes from the USA where it's been running for two decade. There they call it the "bad idea that caught on".

From our base camp, groups head out each day to do a mix of canyons (a mix of wet and dry, technical and non-technical).

I'll post more details of how to join in next year, sharing via the forum and Fat Canyoners social media channels.

Yes, it's the week after the long weekend (many people already have other plans for the long weekend). I'll try and post more details soon.

Can you believe it's been 10 years since the first ever Aussie FreezeFest? To celebrate the anniversary we're heading back to Mount Wilson where it all began way back in 2012.

When: Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 June
Where: Mount Wilson (Cathedral Reserve campground)

*** What is FreezeFest? ***

FreezeFest is an informal gathering of canyoners in the depths of winter. The only pre-requisites to taking part is that you need to be a competent canyoner, capable of looking after yourself, and be mad enough to think that canyoning in the middle of winter is a good idea.

The idea for FreezeFest came from the USA, where it's been running for two decades. There they call it the "bad idea that caught on".

Over here, Julie Burton came up with the idea of a local version in the Blue Mountains back in 2012 and we've been running it on and off ever since.

*** What does it involve? ***

FreezeFest is all about canyoning. During the day, a mix of groups usually head off to a various canyons of various technical levels (and different levels of wet / cold). You're welcome to lead your own trip with friends, an outdoor club, or you can tag along with other people.

In past years, most of the trips have been finalised at camp over breakfast, with plans often changing to suit the weather and group size.

It's also a good chance to meet other canyoners around a campfire on the Friday and Saturday nights.

*** How do I join in? ***

If you're planning to come, please fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sf_link
It will allow us to keep everyone in the loop about logistics, as well as planning trips and carpooling.

Ha! Maybe I should just admit that I'm incapable of being organised. Instead, put the dates for next year in your diary (Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June 2023) and just expect me to not really organise anything else until a couple weeks out.
