I'm always amazed how many canyoners really struggle with navigation. Sure, GPS has made things easier, but the old map and compass is pretty invaluable. Knowing how to read and use maps is also essential if you want to do more exploratory trips.
Anyway, Ashley Burke (a long-time member of the Sydney University Bushwalkers) has an incredible online resource that teaches navigation skills step by step. It's something that takes some time to go through full, given it's so detailed, but winter would be a good time to improve your nav skills ready for some spring canyoning!
