Re: Fiddlestick training session

Great workshop T2 (and Bron & Kosta), am now a convert ... it was great to practice the set up with a range of scenarios to reassure myself that it was something I'd find useful. Thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to share your experience with us.

Hi Tim, any idea when you are going to hold the "try before you buy" (for want of a better word) skills day - or are you planning a couple?

Still beats a 12 hour day to do Puzzle! Mind you, very hot day and one of us got heat exhaustion.

Re: David Crevasse

Let me know when you do Tim, I'm with you have always set it aside as too much time for not enough canyon, but the prussic out definitely has merit.

Re: Publishing details of wilderness / remote canyons

Had to laugh at Craig F's comment about finding a well worn track on your exploration of a canyon. I went out in May to research an exit of an unpublished canyon (my second attempt at finding the bloody thing), needed to check out the exit to make sure the little old lady wasn't going to be freaked ...

Re: What belay/rappel device do you use?

I'm going to test run one in a month or so, they have to be pretty robust for caving with all the mud and grit that you get in caves but will take a closer look. I know someone who used one on the big drop at Pierces Pass and they were pretty happy with it. Because I'm considering retiring the PitSt...

Re: What belay/rappel device do you use?

I'm thinking about getting a Petzl Stop for SRT canyoning (I mainly want it for caving but with some leaders using single ropes in canyons these days the PitStop I've always used just isn't going to cut it - particularly on a Tendon rope). Have you got any opinions Tom on use of the Stop canyoning, ...

Re: Mystery Canyon Pierces Pass?

Yes Dave, I was around at the time of the insurance problems, I seem to recall a whole year went by when our club couldn't (wouldn't) canyon because of lack of insurance. Yes, we have some protection now by the legislation, but not sure it's been tested, and my understanding is responsibility can be...

Love that first photo of her. She was so fortunate to see the canyons before the dam was built.

Re: Mystery Canyon Pierces Pass?

You're right, the marketing has been carefully written to give the idea that it's their hobby and you're going out with him (or her) and his mates. The difference to the meet-up groups and people who hook up on the forums, is that these guys are marketing to tourists who would otherwise go to a comm...

Re: Mystery Canyon Pierces Pass?

It's possible that they've just chosen Pierces Pass as an easy spot to park vehicles, right on the Bells Line, signposted, easy drive then to other locations.

Re: Exploratory canyoning in Tasmania

The conference finishes on the 11th January (that's the end of the post conference field trips), so both Anna and I will be free then, I'll tell her not to plan anything yet. The Machinery Creek one is a field trip in the middle of the conference. I don't have to be back in Sydney until the 4th Febr...

Thanks Dave for so much information, I've always wanted to go there, may have to plan an extended trip to WA. The good thing about this forum is that now the information is filed here, I can find it easily.

Re: Exploratory canyoning in Tasmania

You were right, excellent quality video. And I really liked the attitude of the two guys, you do exploratory, you don't always find something. The last canyon looked like your one up in North West, was it? I'm slotted in to do Machinery Creek (I think that's near Cradle Mt) at the ASF Conference in ...

I agree, it's a good 2-day combo and can't wait until we do the 3 or 4-day combo of Captains and one of the Up Yas (John G has said it has a great constricted section, he didn't give much of a rave about either of the Up Ya canyons but I figure as we're going to be out there may as well take a peak)...

This video was produced by Alan Green, the result of an overnight trip out to Yarramun. The canyon was (a) longer than expected and (b) wetter than expected! It was after a long dry spell so hadn't been flushed out so water wasn't inviting. To gauge whether it was worth the long walk to get there, w...

Re: Penrose Gully

Nice video Dave, :D one of my favourite canyons and the first trip down is always the best. The dodgy bollard anchor was interesting the first time (and I've seen much worse since). When we first did it we went left instead of right trying to find a more direct route out, and there is one, up a pago...
